Model B Tractor 1939 -- 1940
In mid-1938, for the 1939 model year, John Deere introduced a more powerul and cosmetically improved series of general-purpose Model "B" Tractors. Production of what are referred to today as the "styled" Model "B" Series continued on through early 1947.
The "B" Series Tractor of 1939 and 1940 were different than those that followed, as continual engineering changes were made throughout the years. This included a number of unique changes made during a portion of World War II, made necessary because of temporary material shortages.
During the 1939 and 1940 model years, there were 36,331 "B" Series Tractors built, spread over nine distinct models. Of these, the general-purpose (row-crop) tricycle, known simply as the Model "B", was by far the most popular with a production of 32,837. As a contrasting example, there were only 118 of the bed-straddling Model "BW" built.
For the 25th Two-Cylinder Expo, the 1939-1940 Model "B" is the Official Show Toy. The Special Award Toy is the Model "BW".
