The Model C was the first John Deere tractor designed for row crop use.
An arched front axle and rear drop housings provided adequate clearance
for one row of crop cultivation under the tractor and it was powered to
handle another row on either side. Consequently, even though it was
rated as a two-plow tractor, it was called a three-row tractor. In addition
to the three-row cultivator, a three-row integral planter was developed for
the tractor. The engine of the ´´C´´ is of the valve-in-block design, better known
as a flathead. The shorter length of the engine was to help shorten the tractor,
but implement clearance problems later modified that path of the tractor´s
design. After two years of development, the ´´C´´ went into limited production
in the spring of 1927. Field experience revealed the need for design changes,
so the tractors were recalled and rebuilt. A second run was produced a few
months later, but these tractors were also returned to the factory. Finally,
in 1928, the ´´C´´ was approved for regular production, Fewer than 100 were
built. Even though the ´´C´´ had a number of advanced features and introduced the
mechanical power lift to farming, its existence is little known today. It was the first
of what would become a series of general-purpose tractors, designated ´´GP´´ and
´´GP´´ Wide-Tread.
